A no-confidence motion has been submitted against the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Ahmed Nazim.
In a statement shared on social media, the People's Majlis Secretariat confirmed that it had received a resolution seeking Nazim’s removal from the post. The Secretariat stated that the matter will proceed in accordance with the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of Parliament.
Under parliamentary rules, the Deputy Speaker can leave office either by resigning from Parliament or by being removed by a parliamentary vote. The rules also state that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker have the right to attend and speak in sessions debating their removal, although they are not permitted to vote on the motion.
According to parliamentary procedures, a resolution to remove the Deputy Speaker must be submitted with signatures from at least one-fourth of the members of Parliament.
The Secretary-General is required to notify members and the Deputy Speaker within three days of receiving the resolution, after which the matter can be presented at the next official sitting following a 14-day period.
Parliamentary rules further state that once such a resolution is submitted to the floor, other parliamentary matters cannot be debated until a decision is reached on the motion. A resolution to remove the Deputy Speaker must be approved by a majority of members present and voting during the parliamentary sitting.
