The People's Majlis has approved an extension of its first session of the year until May 31 following a vote held during Thursday’s sitting.

The motion was passed with the support of 58 members present, while 11 members voted against the extension. The proposal to extend the session was presented to parliament to allow additional time to complete important legislative work currently before the Majlis.

Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla stated that the extension was proposed to facilitate the completion of matters scheduled for consideration during the ongoing session.

Under parliamentary regulations, the People’s Majlis convenes in three sessions each year. The first session is scheduled to run from February 1 to May 15, while the second session is held from June 1 to August 15 and the third session from October 1 to November.

According to parliamentary procedures, a session may be extended through a vote of members if legislative work submitted to parliament remains incomplete by the scheduled conclusion of the session.
