Ten islands have been awarded grants to establish tree nurseries in support of the Government's Five Million Trees Programme.
The grant agreements were signed with the respective island councils during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy. The nurseries will be used to cultivate saplings required for the nationwide tree-planting initiative.
The islands awarded grants are Haa Alifu Kelaa, Shaviyani Milandhoo, Noonu Kendhikulhudhoo, Raa Innamaadhoo, Baa Maalhos, Alifu Alifu Mathiveri, Meemu Muli, Thaa Kin'bidhoo, Thinadhoo City and Gaafu Alifu Dhaandhoo.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef said that approximately 1.6 million trees have been planted under the programme so far. He noted that the Government had set a target of planting one million trees this year, adding that around 600,000 trees have already been planted.
The minister expressed confidence that the annual target would be achieved before the end of the year.
Ali Shareef said the newly awarded grants mark the beginning of efforts to expand the programme through the establishment of regional nurseries, which are expected to be completed within seven months.
Trees grown at the nurseries will be distributed to nearby islands to support planting efforts across the country.
Launched on World Environment Day last year, the Five Million Trees Programme aims to increase greenery, restore endangered tree species and strengthen environmental sustainability throughout the Maldives.
