President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the Government's policies will focus on achieving balanced and sustainable development across the Maldives by addressing regional disparities and reducing the factors that drive migration to Malé.
Speaking in the fourth episode of the President's Office podcast The Pulse, the President said the Government's development agenda is centred on creating equal opportunities throughout the country rather than concentrating development in the capital.
He said Malé's congestion and traffic challenges cannot be resolved through temporary measures alone, as they are the result of development being concentrated in one area for many years. Instead, he said, the Government is prioritising long-term solutions that address the root causes of the issue.
President Dr Muizzu highlighted plans to establish integrated development zones in the northern and southern regions, creating major urban centres with quality healthcare, education, housing, employment opportunities and other essential services. He said these centres would support a decentralised model of development, allowing people to access services comparable to those available in Malé while remaining closer to their home islands.
The President noted that many people relocate to Malé in search of better education, employment and housing. He said expanding these opportunities across the country would encourage more people to live and work in their own islands or nearby communities, easing pressure on the capital while promoting balanced regional development.
He added that the Government is also implementing major housing projects and constructing multi-storey parking facilities in the Greater Malé Region to improve living conditions and reduce congestion. However, the President stressed that measures such as limiting vehicle ownership would not provide a lasting solution without addressing the underlying causes.
President Dr Muizzu also highlighted the recently launched Youth Entrepreneurship Financing Scheme for young people aged between 18 and 30, saying it would support the establishment of small businesses and start-ups while strengthening economic activity across the country.
He reaffirmed that the Government remains committed to improving the quality of life of all citizens through policies that promote balanced, sustainable development and deliver long-term solutions to the country's social and economic challenges.
