National airline Maldivian has retired another DHC-8-300 aircraft as part of its ongoing fleet modernisation programme, marking another milestone in its transition to a new generation of ATR aircraft.

The aircraft, registered 8Q-IAS with manufacturer serial number 546, departed for Canada on 16 July after serving the Maldives for more than 14 years. During its time with the airline, it completed over 29,000 flight hours and 37,000 flight cycles, connecting communities across the country.

Maldivian said the aircraft was retired following a public Request for Proposal (RFP) process and has been returned to De Havilland Canada, its original manufacturer, 26 years after it was built.

The airline described the retirement as another step in its fleet renewal strategy, under which ageing Dash 8 turboprop aircraft are being replaced with modern ATR aircraft. The new fleet is expected to offer greater passenger comfort, improved operational reliability, enhanced fuel efficiency and a lower environmental impact.

Maldivian has already introduced ATR aircraft into service and plans to add two more before the end of this year and in the first half of next year, further accelerating the airline's fleet modernisation programme.

The airline said the retirement of 8Q-IAS brings the aircraft's journey full circle while reinforcing its commitment to building a modern, efficient and more sustainable fleet for the future.
