Bassam Adeel Jaleel, the former Football Association of Maldives (FAM) president, faces new charges from the Prosecutor General's Office for allegedly embezzling USD 120,000 in FIFA funds to purchase property at Amin Avenue. The second charge involves money laundering, where Bassam allegedly orchestrated the transfer of MVR 25 million from FAM's account to acquire a luxury penthouse, an offence carrying up to 15 years' imprisonment. The prosecution is also seeking to recover USD 1.2 million in losses and seize the penthouse, whilst indicating that further charges may be forthcoming against both Bassam and other FAM staff members.
