Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that while port vessels will be subject to fees in the newly expanded area on the northern side of Malé City, fishing vessels entering the area will be exempt from such charges.

The port extension now reaches from the existing northern section of Malé City to the local fish market. MPL was officially assigned responsibility for the management and maintenance of this area in early July.

According to the company, Zones ‘E’ and ‘F’, already in use by fishing boats, have now been designated exclusively for fishing vessels. MPL reaffirmed that no charges will be levied on fishing vessels operating within these zones. However, vehicles transporting goods and passengers will be charged based on existing fee structures.

The company detailed the new tariff system for different sections of the port. In Zone ‘A’, a charge of MVR .50 per metre will apply, calculated based on the width of the vehicle. Meanwhile, in Zones ‘B’ and ‘C’, a reduced fee of MVR 1 per metre will be charged, also based on vehicle width.

The designated area for fishing boats will soon be restructured, and a queuing system will be introduced to manage service provision more efficiently. This process of reorganising and rejuvenating the area is expected to be completed within the next two to three days.

MPL also addressed the current presence of foreign nationals residing in the fishing zone, stating that individuals who have established permanent dwellings and are conducting business within the designated area will be relocated. The area will be strictly reserved for fishing-related activities going forward.

Currently, approximately 130 boats operate each month from the port on the northern side of Malé City. MPL noted that, previously, fishing boats often had to wait up to five days to secure a position along the quay wall. With the new arrangements in place, the company anticipates that berthing time will be reduced significantly, with vessels able to dock within two days, and potentially within one day.

Furthermore, MPL has confirmed plans to organise port services based on designated operational zones. The 14-year-old port is also undergoing renovation works as part of this broader development effort.

Described as one of the most strategically important areas in Malé City, the northern port is receiving focused attention. MPL is currently working to enhance service provision at the facility, including improvements to water and fuel supply systems, the expansion of storage capacity, and the installation of surveillance cameras and security checkpoints to ensure the safety of the upgraded port area.
