The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has reported that 112 stray cats have been taken into the Olhu Hiya Facility, where most of them are currently under quarantine.
This is part of the Government’s initiative to manage the stray cat population in Malé. Authorities confirmed that efforts are ongoing to transfer more stray cats to the facility in the coming days.
The Olhu Hiya Facility, initially opened without quarantine capacity, has since undergone significant upgrades. It is now equipped to quarantine up to 100 cats.
With the improved capacity, the government has resumed efforts to relocate stray cats to the Olhu Hiya Facility. As part of this initiative, 28 stray cats were brought into the facility in July.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, the relocation process was temporarily halted due to bad weather but has since resumed. Since then, 75 additional stray cats have been taken into the Olhu Hiya Facility, bringing the total number of cats housed at the facility to 112.
The Government is continuously working to improve facilities at the Olhu Hiya Facility to accommodate more stray cats.
