Three individuals have been rescued after a cargo boat, Al Majra, capsized early Friday morning near Meemu Dhiggiri. The vessel, en route from Malé to Thaa Veymandoo, sank after reportedly striking a reef while carrying a heavy load of goods.
The incident was reported to the police at 5:34 am. Officers from Vaavu Atoll responded swiftly and located the three individuals stranded on the reef. Police confirmed that all three, comprising one Maldivian and two Bangladeshi nationals, were rescued in good health and transported to Felidhoo.
According to the police, Al Majra had been overloaded with PVC foam boards and various construction materials. The boat and its cargo have since sunk into the ocean. Authorities cautioned that many of the items are being carried off by strong waves, and advised the public and seafarers in the area to remain alert.
The incident occurred during a period of severe weather affecting the region. The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned that the southwest monsoon will bring continued rainfall until Thursday, accompanied by strong winds and rough seas, particularly across northern and central atolls.
In a separate incident on the same day, a boat bound for Thaa Atoll capsized, while another travelling from Haa Alif Manafaru to Thilafushi also overturned. Three individuals were rescued by Maldives National Defence Force personnel.
