A new fish aggregating device (FAD) has been installed 7 miles southeast of Meemu Dhihthun’di, bringing the total number of FADs deployed across the country to 102.

The nationwide network now includes 65 FADs for pole and line fishing and 37 for sports fishing.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, 38 requests have been received for new FADs, of which nine have been deployed so far.

Alongside ongoing deployments, the Government is also working to expand FAD manufacturing capacity. The country’s sole facility in Hulhumalé has struggled to meet growing demand, and a second FAD production centre is planned for Shaviyani Funadhoo. Construction is expected to begin before December, with the new facility aimed at boosting national capacity to produce and deploy FADs more efficiently.
