Ministry advances project for 50 new council buildings

The Government has begun preparatory work for the construction of 50 council office buildings across various islands, under a grant aid programme from the Chinese government.

The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works held a meeting  6 August, between officials from the Ministry’s Project Department and a visiting Chinese technical team. The discussions focused on technical coordination, island selection for feasibility studies, and scheduling site visits.

The 50 buildings will be constructed on selected islands, with priority given to underserved communities. The initiative follows the signing of a letter of exchange between the Maldivian and Chinese governments.

The Government has identified the following islands for assessment:

  • Haa Alifu Atoll: Vashafaru, Ihavandhoo, Dhihdhoo
  • Haa Dhaalu Atoll: Kumundhoo, Neykurandhoo, Vaikaradhoo
  • Shaviyani Atoll: Feydhoo, Komandoo, Goidhoo, Narudhoo
  • Noonu Atoll: Hen'badhoo, Lhohi, Fohdhoo, Manadhoo, Magoodhoo, Landhoo
  • Raa Atoll: Vaadhoo, Hulhudhuffaaru
  • Baa Atoll: Kamadhoo, Kudarikilu, Fehendhoo, Eydhafushi, Thulhaadhoo, Kihaadhoo
  • Lhaviyani Atoll: Kurendhoo
  • Kaafu Atoll: Himmafushi, Kaashidhoo, Guraidhoo, Thulusdhoo, Gaafaru
  • Alif Dhaalu Atoll: Kum'burudhoo, Mahibadhoo, Fenfushi
  • Meemu Atoll: Muli, Dhiggaru, Mulah
  • Faafu Atoll: Feeali
  • Dhaalu Atoll: Hulhudheli, Ban'didhoo
  • Thaa Atoll: Omadhoo, Gaadhiffushi, Buruni, Guraidhoo, Veymandoo
  • Laamu Atoll: Maabaidhoo, Kunahandhoo, Maavah
  • Gaafu Alifu Atoll: Maamendhoo, Nilandhoo
  • Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll: Madaveli

The Ministry stated that construction will commence in phases once the feasibility studies are finalised and technical approvals obtained, forming a key component of President Dr Muizzu’s decentralisation agenda.
