State Electric Company (STELCO) plans to transition 50% of small islands in the Maldives to solar energy within five years, aiming to deliver at least 12 hours of solar-powered electricity daily. Managing Director Hussain Fahmy highlighted successful projects like Vaavu Rakeedhoo, where solar energy powers the island for up to 22 hours a day, reducing reliance on diesel generators. The initiative represents a pivotal step in the Maldives’ efforts to combat climate change and champion renewable energy solutions.
