Parliament has passed important amendments to the Copyright and Related Rights Act, expanding protections to include more types of works such as technical products, performances, and broadcasts. The updated law, which extends copyright protection from 50 to 70 years, allows copyright holders to take legal action against violations and claim compensation. The amendments also introduce new penalties, with fines ranging from MVR 10,000 to MVR 300,000 for various levels of infringement.
