The Government has unveiled plans to transform Northern and Southern regions into urban development zones to accommodate populations of 100,000 residents, addressing population growth and enhancing regional services. Key projects include international gateways, trans-shipment ports, and high-quality service hubs in both zones, fostering local employment, tourism, and economic activities. This initiative, part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's manifesto, aims to decentralise development and reduce reliance on Malé.
