The constitutional amendment to Article 73, specifically the addition of subsection (e), introduces an anti-defection law for Members of Parliament. This reform mandates the disqualification of MPs who defect from the political party under which they were elected, join another party after being elected as an independent candidate, or leave or are expelled from their party during their term. Previously, the Constitution lacked explicit provisions to address such scenarios, which allowed for party switching without consequences. The amendment aims to enhance accountability and preserve the integrity of parliamentary representation by preventing political instability and ensuring members remain committed to their original mandate. The 6th Amendment to the Constitution, ratified on 20 November 2024, marks a significant reform in parliamentary regulations and governance.
