The Statistics Act of the Maldives establishes the national statistical system and provides the legal framework for the collection, compilation, analysis, dissemination and use of official statistics. The legislation aims to ensure the production of reliable, impartial and timely statistical information on the country's economic, social and environmental conditions to support evidence-based policymaking and public access to official data.

Under the Act, the Chief Statistician heads the Bureau of Statistics and is appointed by the President from among eligible applicants. The Bureau operates under the policy guidance of the Minister of Finance, while a 10-member Statistical Council advises on statistical policies, the Bureau's functions and the continued development of the national statistical system.
