Fuvahmulah City has launched the Maldives' first Shark Research and Conservation Hub, marking a significant step towards advancing shark research, marine education and conservation in the country.
The hub was officially inaugurated by Fuvahmulah City Mayor Ismail Rafeeq.
Established by the non-governmental organisation The Shark Programme, the facility will serve as a centre for shark research and conservation while promoting greater understanding of the island's unique marine environment. The Fuvahmulah City Council said the hub will also bring together scientists, environmental organisations and local communities to strengthen efforts to protect sharks and the surrounding marine ecosystem.
Founded in January 2023, The Shark Programme has been researching shark species found in Maldivian waters with the support of local and international experts. The organisation also advocates for shark conservation at the international level and described the new hub as an important milestone in expanding its research and conservation work.
Fuvahmulah has gained international recognition as one of the world's leading shark diving destinations. The City Council and local dive centres have been working to further promote the island as a premier destination for shark tourism, an effort that earned Fuvahmulah the Best Shark Diving Destination award at Asia's largest diving expo in December 2024.
The waters surrounding Fuvahmulah are home to several rare species of sharks and rays that are rarely found elsewhere in the Maldives. The island attracts large numbers of divers and marine enthusiasts each month who visit to observe sharks up close and experience its renowned dive sites.
