The next phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project will focus on the stretch between North Harbour and Rasfannu, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced.
Speaking on the fourth episode of The Pulse podcast, the President said the project is being implemented by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) as previously planned.
The section currently under development between the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and Izzuddin Jetty is expected to reopen next week. Once work on the section is completed, development will begin from the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) area towards Rasfannu.
President Dr Muizzu described the North Harbour-Rasfannu stretch as the most deteriorated section of the road, with significant damage to its surface. He said upgrading the area would ease access to Malé’s market and commercial district while reducing congestion on roads across the capital.
Under the project, Boduthakurufaanu Magu is being widened and developed with two lanes, allowing traffic in both directions. The President said the changes are expected to improve traffic flow across Malé, particularly around the market area and inner roads.
The President added that trees would be planted along both sides of the road to create a more pleasant environment for pedestrians.
Work is currently underway between the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and Izzuddin Jetty includes road signs, streetlight installation, and the placement of signboards. Asphalt has already been laid along the section.
The first phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project covers five segments and is aimed at providing a long-term solution to traffic congestion in Malé. Although the project was initially scheduled for completion in June, MTCC now estimates that the full project will be completed by 26 July.
