China remains a key partner in the Maldives' infrastructure development, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said, highlighting the country's continued support for major Government projects.
Speaking on the fourth episode of The Pulse podcast, the President said the Maldives would maintain close relations with any country where cooperation benefits the Maldivian people, adding that prioritising the interests of Maldivians remains the Government's foreign policy.
President Dr Muizzu said China has been a reliable partner, particularly in infrastructure development and housing projects, and reaffirmed the Government's commitment to continuing cooperation with the Chinese government.
The President also highlighted the planned modernisation of Malé roads, one of the country's largest infrastructure projects, which is being implemented with grant assistance from China. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027.
He said the project will introduce stormwater drainage, dewatering systems used during construction, and fire hydrant infrastructure alongside the road network, in addition to upgrading the roads.
The Malé roads project was agreed during President Dr Muizzu's official visit to China. The feasibility study, survey, design, and construction phases are being carried out through China's procurement procedures for projects funded under its grant assistance programme.
